Châteauneuf-du-Pape – The Crown of the Southern Rhône

Châteauneuf-du-Pape is the southern Rhône’s most celebrated appellation, producing powerful, complex blends from up to 13 permitted grape varieties. Its signature landscape of galets roulés—large, smooth, heat-retaining stones—is one of the most recognizable terroirs in all of wine.

History & Heritage

The appellation traces its name to the 14th century, when the papacy relocated to Avignon and the popes planted vineyards in the surrounding countryside. Châteauneuf-du-Pape became France’s first AOC in 1936, thanks to the efforts of Baron Pierre Le Roy de Boiseaumarié of Château Fortia, who established rules that became the template for the entire French appellation system. Estates like Rayas, Beaucastel, and Vieux Télégraphe have shaped its modern identity.

Terroir & Vineyards

The appellation covers 3,200 hectares across varied terrain: the famous galets roulés (rounded stones over red clay) dominate the plateau, while sandier and limestone soils appear at higher elevations. The galets absorb heat during the day and radiate it at night, ensuring full ripeness. The Mistral wind keeps the vines dry and healthy. Key lieux-dits include La Crau, Pignan, La Nerthe, Barbe Rac, and Les Callioux.

Wine Style

Red Châteauneuf is typically Grenache-dominant (50–80%), blended with Syrah, Mourvèdre, and others. The wines are generous, spicy, and warm—ripe red and dark fruit, garrigue herbs, leather, and earth—with relatively soft tannins and 14–16% alcohol. The rare whites (6% of production) are rich and honeyed, from Grenache Blanc, Roussanne, and Clairette. Top wines age 15–30+ years.
