Cornas – Pure Syrah, No Compromise

Cornas is the northern Rhône’s most uncompromising appellation: 100% Syrah, no blending, no compromise. This tiny, south-facing amphitheatre of granite and limestone produces some of the most intense, dark-fruited, and age-worthy Syrah in France—and remains one of the great values in fine wine.

History & Heritage

Cornas’ winemaking history predates the Roman era—the name is Celtic for “burnt earth,” referencing the sun-baked granite slopes. Yet for most of the 20th century, Cornas was nearly forgotten. August Clape kept the faith through the lean years, producing transcendent wines that attracted a devoted following. The arrival of Thierry Allemand in the 1980s and the new generation (Guillaume Gilles, Franck Balthazar) sparked a renaissance. Today, just 120 hectares produce some of France’s most exciting wines.

Terroir & Vineyards

Cornas’ vineyards form a south-facing horseshoe of steep, terraced granite slopes, sheltered from the Mistral by surrounding hills. The decomposed granite soil provides excellent drainage and low fertility, concentrating flavour. At 125–350 metres altitude, the vines receive maximum sun exposure. Key lieux-dits include Chaillot, Reynards, Les Mazards, La Geynale, and Sabarotte. Many vineyards require hand-work only due to the extreme steepness.

Wine Style

Cornas is dark, brooding, and powerful—the most tannic and muscular of the northern Rhône Syrahs in youth. Notes of blackberry, black olive, smoked meat, violet, and crushed rock dominate. With 8–20 years of ageing, the wines develop extraordinary depth: truffle, game, leather, and a mineral purity. Unlike Hermitage, Cornas is always 100% Syrah, giving it a singular, unblended intensity.
