Le Mesnil-sur-Oger – The Pinnacle of Blanc de Blancs

Le Mesnil-sur-Oger is the Côte des Blancs’ most revered village, producing Grand Cru Chardonnay of extraordinary precision, minerality, and ageing potential. Home to Salon and Krug’s Clos du Mesnil, it represents the absolute pinnacle of Blanc de Blancs Champagne.

History & Heritage

Le Mesnil gained Grand Cru status in 1985, one of just 17 villages in Champagne with the designation. Aimé Salon founded his legendary house here in 1911, producing a single wine—a vintage Blanc de Blancs—in only the greatest years. Krug acquired their walled Clos du Mesnil vineyard in 1971, creating one of the most exclusive Champagnes in existence. Small growers like Pierre Peters and Jacques Selosse have further elevated the village’s reputation since the 2000s.

Terroir & Vineyards

Le Mesnil sits on a deep bed of Campanian chalk (Belemnite limestone), the same geological formation that defines the Côte des Blancs. The chalk provides excellent drainage and a constant supply of moisture through capillary action, ensuring steady vine growth even in dry years. East-facing slopes at 200–230 metres altitude provide optimal sun exposure. This combination produces Chardonnay of laser-like acidity and profound mineral intensity.

Wine Style

Le Mesnil Champagne is defined by its acidity and mineral tension. Young wines can be austere and steely; with age, they develop extraordinary depth—chalk, brioche, citrus confit, and a seemingly endless finish. The best cuvees can age 20–40+ years. Blanc de Blancs from Le Mesnil is typically leaner and more linear than wines from neighbouring Avize or Oger, making it the benchmark for precision in Champagne.
